… and retracted back into Suzi’s vessel where she activated the ship’s security filters to block him out. When done, she took further measures to prevent the virus from entering Suzi’s Earwig. They wouldn’t stop the enemy completely, but they would buy Suzi some time.

JT ran through the dimly lit corridor. Most of his people were dead and the place was going up in flames, all whilst the laughter of the clown and the sinister carnival music echoed around him.
He swore repeatedly, filled with fury.
No way in hell was he letting his Heartbeat go to the enemy.
He ripped open a panel on the wall and bypassed some systems to activate a self-destruct sequence with a minimal countdown, then he ensured that the Shockwave would stop the alien force from deactivating the timer before the base blew.
Less than a minute was all he needed.

Suzi’s long suppressed emotions were taking over. Rags could sense it. For the first time ever, Suzi shuddered, and Rags felt that shudder run through them both.
“It’s done, cousin!” Rags called. “I forgive you! You have to forgive yourself! Now go!”
Suzi was determined not to. “I won’t!”
Rags was adamant. “Go!”
“I –”
A massive gust of wind swept in, breaking their hold on each other. Suzi reached out desperately for Rags but failed, then watched helplessly as the final member of her family was sucked away from her. There was no time to feel anything, save for the howling winds which pummelled into her own body as she was sent spiralling away into the blurring rush of the slipstream.

The Heartbeat exploded.
Jenny gave a cry which was engulfed by the titanic bellow of the blast deep in the valley behind her. A blast as large and as fierce as the Hurriflame, and one that again split the night apart.
Even though Jenny was well away from it, and being pulled along by Gold, the noise was still deafening. The air red-hot. Several black and gold clouds of fire billowed over their heads as they dropped to the ground. A further eruption sent a second burst of fire shooting high into the sky, accompanied by the golden halo of the Shockwave.
Jenny felt the earth tremble as further explosions rippled throughout the tunnels of the Heartbeat far below them.

In another part of the valley, Terror-Byte watched the explosion of the Heartbeat from a different angle, unaffected by the intensity of the glare.
It was fortunate that JT had ordered him to stay away from the base, he thought. It seemed that his superior simply couldn’t take the risk of having him and Suzi around together. One Agent was bad enough, but two? That would have been too much of a threat for JT.
Terror-Byte had stayed outside the Heartbeat on standby since then. He’d watched Suzi’s chopper leave the base with envy. It didn’t surprise him when the situation spiralled out of control. The humans were inefficient as always, he concluded. If he’d been in command then none of this would have happened.
He watched another wave of fire soar high into the night.
